Checking In

It’s been a while since I posted, so I thought I would let you guys know what is going on with the Griffin family.

I started work in my new job as a 7th grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher at  the middle school I attended.  It is so wonderful to be back where I grew up.  I am actually teaching the children of some of the people I went to school with – and that is hilarious.  You can look at some them coming down the hallway and be able to say, “Hey!  I know exactly who your mama or daddy is.”

Nicholas has had a REALLY great start to the school year.  He has been struggling with a sinus infection for a few weeks, but he is getting better.  We actually went and played tennis last night.   He went to Chapel Hill on Wednesday – his weight and his lung function were down, but we contribute that to the sinus infection.   He has a new special “friend.”  Her name is Ashley and she is good medicine for him.

John is working hard, as usual.  After a long, wonderful life of service, his truck passed away and we had to purchase a new car.

Miranda just celebrated her 14th birthday.  She got an electric, acoustic Fender.  It is solid cedar and it is gorgeous!

Brian and Heather are doing well also.  Heather has a new job and is LOVING it.  And it is so hard to believe that Kailey will be a year old in a few days.  She is growing up SO fast.

SO…we are all doing well.  We haven’t fallen off the face of the earth.  I have just been so busy.  I’m going to try to do better.  If you have a Facebook, look me up and friend me.  You can definitely keep up that way.  We are so thankful that Nicholas is well and that everything is going along smoothly.  Thanks for checking in.

“Me Lord”

This is my beautiful, talented daughter, Miranda.  This is the second song for which  she has written the lyrics and the music.  We are very proud of her. Share it with your family and friends.  You can find this and other pieces of her work as they are created at www.myspace.com/mirandagriffinmusic

Clerk of Court

As of this evening at 6:30 pm, our daughter is one of the new Teen Clerks of Court.  Teen Court was established to give kids a second chance when they make mistakes.  They have to be a first time offender, they have to admit guilt, and they have to be referred by their school to be able to recieve the benefits of Teen Court.

Miranda was referred to the Teen Court by one of her teachers.  She had to go into an interview with the Teen Court coordinator, she went through 8 hours of training and tonight she participated in a swearing-in ceremony.  They have to commit to the Teen Court for a one year period and agree to serve at least four times.  They can choose to serve at the Tarboro, Rocky Mount, or Nashville courthouse, or all three.  They can choose to be a clerk of court, a baliff, a prosecuting attorney, a defending attorney, or a jury member.  A real judge, a real attorney, and a real baliff are there to help make sure guidelines are followed.  When cases come up that need to be heard, these Teen Court volunteers will recieve a summons to report to court just like your or I would.  They can hear as many as 6 cases a night.

I am very proud that she has taken an interest in being available to help her peers make smarter choices and helping them to recover from unfortunate mistakes.  This is a wonderful opportunity for her to “give back to the community” especially at such a young age.

Where the Sidewalk Ends

Remember the book Where the Sidewalk Ends, by Shel Silverstein?  It was published in 1974.  I was 6 years old when it came out.  I remember reading it.  Well, I was given a copy recently and Miranda fell in love with it.  I think she has read the whole entire book aloud to all of us.  I admit that parts of it are funny, some are really cute, a lot of his poems are just plain odd and make no sense what-so-ever (except to him, of course).

While reading the book, Miranda came across a poem that caught her attention.  This is the poem that got her to reading the whole book aloud.  I thought I would share it.

No Difference

Small as a peanut,
Big as a giant,
We’re all the same size
When we turn off the light.

Rich as a Sultan,
Poor as a mite,
We’re all worth the same
When we turn off the light.

Red, black or orange,
Yellow or white,
We all look the same
When we turn off the light.

So maybe the way
To make everything right,
Is for God to just reach out
And turn off the light.

What do you think he means by that?  Is he simply trying to say that God needs to show us the truth about these things, OR is he saying this in a more dark-thinking way?  Does he mean that God should end the earth or take away the sun?  Or does he mean anything at all?  Thoughts?  Seriously, what do you think?  I couldn’t answer the question…

Ankle Update

The nurse gave Miranda a brace to wear.  Basically, the way I understand it is that she is going to have to treat the ankle as if she had a cast on it.  The nurse said that it is going to hurt.  It is going to swell.  She is going to have to be very careful.  I still don’t understand why no cast, but I guess I have to move on from that now.

One the way out of the doctor’s office, she fell.  She’s fine, but good gracious.  They are sitting in the pharmacy waiting for her to collect herself and then they will be on their way home.

……No Cast

BUT…..the doctor says we have to remember that she has sustained an injury and she is not going to be able to walk on it alot right away.  She is not going to be back to her old self within a week.  She is going to still need to use her crutches and there is still quite a bit of swelling so she is going to have to prop it up if the swelling increases.  I asked him about camp and he said that I knew what camp was going to be like and he would leave that decision up to me, BUT to remember what he had just said.  She cannot do alot of walking right away.  I can’t believe they took her cast off after only three weeks.  I don’t think she should go and risk the chance of re-injurying herself.  There is alot of walking at Caswell.  I think she is a little hesitant about going herself.  She said that if I think she shouldn’t go, then she won’t go.  So she is not going.  I would rather be safe than sorry.

THEN…..we came home and she tried to walk on it.  We heard something pop and she was in severe pain.  It is swollen more now as well.  I called the doctor’s office and they said that the swelling was going to happen; that it is going to hurt.  That she needs to prop it up and put some ice on it.  They want us to take her back in the morning between 9 and 9:30 so they can put a brace on it.  She is so upset.  She does not want a brace – she wants the cast back on it.  She is upset because he didn’t make her walk on it for him today.  Standing on it did not hurt so bad, but she says walking on it kills her.   She knows now that she will not be going to camp.  I still cannot believe they took the cast off after three weeks.  John is taking her in the morning.  If I go, I may not be nice.  He can do it gracefully.  I feel so bad for her – I have never had to have a cast on any part of my body, so I can’t imagine what she is feeling.  I hope the brace is strong enough to make her feel safer.

Please pray for her comfort.  I know what it feels like to be in pain - as many of you do.  I pray that she will heal quickly.  Thanks for all your prayers today and for your patience on getting back with the news.

Cast or No Cast? That is the Question.

Today we find out if Miranda loses her cast or of she keeps it.  Considering it hasn’t even been a month yet, I think she is going to keep it.  But we will see.  Pray for her.  She is upset that she is probably not going to go to camp next week.
